Divorce Lawyer Extorted by Dentist

Just happened upon this story from KTBS TV in Shreveport and felt compelled to pass it along. Sadly, this sounds like another day in the life of a divorce lawyer dealing with a difficult client.

“A retired dentist has been arrested in Natchitoches on charges he unlawfully pressured an attorney to finalize his divorce.

Walter B. Atkinson, 59, who is from Baton Rouge but now lives in Natchitoches, was booked by sheriff’s deputies on two counts each of extortion and defamation.

Sheriff Victor Jones said the alleged victim was a Natchitoches attorney who was handling Atkinson’s divorce. The attorney got a letter telling him to finalize Atkinsons’s divorce proceeding and property settlement “or suffer consequences,” Jones said.

The sheriff’s office got involved after some Natchitoches residents got T-shirts in the mail that ridiculed the attorney, Jones said. The attorney, whose name is not being released, also got another letter threatening more action if he did not publicly apologize in local newspapers, Jones said.”
