Are you using your firm logo as your Twitter icon?
I hope not. We don’t want to talk to your law firm. We want to talk to you – a real person. It’s hard for me to connect with a logo. I need a blood and guts person on the other end of that Twitter feed.
Seriously, I follow a bunch of people on Twitter. I’m interested in their lives, their work, their ups and downs. I’m hesitant to say it, but I’m even interested in what they had for lunch. Arguably, I’m more interested in their lunch than a bunch of the other stuff.
But that’s just a quirk of my personality. I think about food all day long.
My objective with Twitter is to connect with people. I want to get to know them. I want to hear what they have to say. I’d like to be comfortable referring business to them and saying hello if we meet up at a CLE or a conference.
I can’t really do that with an anonymous law firm logo. I’m not sure who’s tweeting. I’m not sure if there’s a real person back there and I’m hesitant to engage with you.
Please, if your going to come out and play on Twitter, if you want to get to know me and the rest of us, then be yourself. Be a person. Put up a picture of yourself or, at a minimum, something personal, like your cat (I hate pictures of cats).
Don’t stick your logo up there and don’t tweet like you’re a business. Be a person.

I am on the fence about this one. I still can’t make up my mind if it is better to market using my domain and telephone number or market me. Considering your site probably gets about a gazillion more hits, maybe I should heed the advice!
