Where Do You Send Clients Struggling with Debt?

Debt is an issue for many of our clients. It’s a fact of life in America. Most people you meet are overextended in one way or another. Even attorneys suffer from too much debt. We’ve represented more attorneys than I can count who are struggling with more debt than they can handle.

Most lawyers don’t have any particular expertise or ability to advise clients on how to get out of debt (with the exception, of course, of those practicing bankruptcy law).

So where can you send clients for advice? Where should they go when they really need help? Unfortunately, most of the debt services that claim to provide counseling or other assistance only make things worse. A multitude of vendors offer “assistance” that sometimes has the effect of increasing the debt rather than eliminating it.

That’s where Creditable comes in. Creditable helps users develop a debt elimination plan using a concept sometimes referred to as the “debt snowball.” That phrase has been made popular by advisors like Dave Ramsey. Creditable provides a range of free tools, and the site is evolving quickly. The service is free and anonymous. It provides answers to questions and helps users track their progress. The site has a thriving community, and it automatically links users with others working toward similar goals.

Creditable is a valuable place to refer clients who need debt management help. It gives them hope and a plan for getting their finances under control.

Almost every bankruptcy attorney across the country offers a free consultation. I know I’m biased but I would definitely encourage folks to take advantage of that free consultation. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen who have taken out huge amounts from their 401Ks or payday loans, etc. etc.

Bankruptcy is, without a doubt, not for everyone. However, those with serious debt should at least consider going to that free consultation to learn about the pros and cons.

As always – good post Lee!
